They believed that once some other webmaster are linking there site to a particular site, they tend to lay important on the site been linked to
because they believed such a site should have quality a content.

The ranking method used by the search engines are automated and so when the robots sent by the search engine see a link going out through a site, they give that url a +1 ( although some other criteria’s are also used).
